Juan Sebastian
Juan Sebastian
Juan Sebastian coaxes viewers into the depths of their subconscious, casting a veil over their ability to distinguish between where their reality ends and his photographs begin. Inspiring contemplation on the taboo and the precedent, the suppressed and the expressed, his grandiose pieces reveal the intertwined nature of things like gender, sexuality, culture, and the journey to self-discovery through the perilous roads of transformation that litter our lives. Utilizing the natural dance between light and dark as well as the human form and motion, Sebastian provides a glimpse into the mystical parallels that allow dreams to feel so real while simultaneously being all-too divorced from reality.

His Columbian heritage serving as a muse even after his move to Miami at the age of 17, Juan Sebastian earned his MFA from the University of Miami (2019) where he would later become a professor, further exemplifying his dedication to the discipline of Fine Art Photography. Apparent in his enchanting life-sized photographs intended to hypnotize and mesmerize, the influence of literary works such as those by Isabel Allende and Gabriel Garcia takes centerstage in the form of magical realism. As many artists are inclined to do, Sebastian allows his own experiences and memories to bleed into the pieces, enabling an intimate intermingling between the viewer’s invoked experience and the artist’s own soul.

Recognized and exhibited in cities worldwide from New York to Barranquilla and, notably, Venice alongside the Venice Art Biennale (One Piece Man), his work both seduces and repels with a distinct ability to reflect onto the viewer their very own fears, dreams, and desires. Living and working in Miami, Florida, where he founded Galeria Subtitulo (2020) to support and uplift artists throughout the Americas, Sebastian plans to make his first photo book available for presale in the summer of 2024. His work will be incorporated into the Minnie Park Art Project’s April 2024 group exhibition in New York City, which will feature other art that similarly exudes an aura of majesty, depth, and divinity.
