A New York City native born in 1970, he currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. After studying the arts in his youth, his BFA from Parsons School of Visual Arts and MFA from the Mason Gross School of Arts seemed a natural progression in his already promising journey in the Arts. From exploring video content starting in 1996 to comics, sitcom-style series, columns, online series, pop music, and paintings and installations, Richards Smit dipped into various outlets for his contemplations and commentaries on the quirks of life.

His installation "The Artist’s World" was first exhibited in 2001 (CCAC, Oakland, CA) before he went on to have his works highlighted at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City (MOMA Media Scope, 2002, and Nausea 2, 2004), Centre Pompidou in Paris (STAND UP!, 2015), and the Charlie James Gallery in LA (Platform Art, 2022). Having amassed an extensive number of awards and residencies from the Penny McCall Foundation Award in 2004 to his work at the La Napoule Art Foundation in 2023, Guy Richards Smit continues to build a body of amusing yet impactful and riveting work. In the near future, he will once again provoke thought and introspection.
