Sangdon Kim

Sangdon Kim

Born in 1973, Sangdon Kim is a South Korean artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans photography, sculpture, installation, performance, and video. Internationally acclaimed for his intellectual depth and evocative artistry, Kim interrogates the hidden tensions and fleeting moments within contemporary society. His work compels viewers to confront the cultural illusions and societal fluxes that underpin modern life, making his oeuvre both incisive and enduring.

Kim’s artistic philosophy is profoundly rooted in shamanistic polytheism and pluralism, which he considers vital frameworks for comprehending the interplay between the sacred and the secular. By juxtaposing modern quotidian objects with traditional Korean shamanistic tools, Kim creates works imbued with symbolic resonance, bridging historical traditions with contemporary realities. His practice seeks to reconnect fragmented narratives lost to modernization, re-establishing a “Wi-Fi of thought” that invites audiences to rediscover what has been forgotten. This endeavor reflects his belief in the enduring power of communal catharsis and spiritual harmony in times of civilizational crisis.

Kim is currently represented exclusively by Minnie Park Art Project, where he is actively developing new works that expand his artistic dialogue. His current projects are showcased in our ongoing exhibition, further cementing his relevance within the contemporary art landscape.

Throughout his illustrious career, Kim has exhibited at leading international institutions, including the Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico, the Bielefelder Kunstverein in Germany, and Galerie Houg in France. His work has also been featured at the New Museum of Contemporary Art and DOOSAN Gallery New York, where he completed a prestigious residency. His contributions to major international biennials, such as the Gwangju Biennale and Busan Biennale, demonstrate his global impact and intellectual resonance.

Sangdon Kim’s practice bridges the ancient and the modern, the pragmatic and the metaphysical, and the tangible and the intangible. Through his exclusive collaboration with Minnie Park Art Project, Kim continues to redefine the boundaries of contemporary art while honoring the profound legacies of the past. His work invites viewers into an act of reflection that transcends time and space, offering a meditative exploration of identity, culture, and spirituality.
